| A couple days ago, I had gone to Burger King with a few buddies of mine.?We sat down by the TV so we could watch some real commercials (We're stuck with stupid military commercials on base in Japan).?While we ate we watched CNN.?Anderson Cooper 360 just happened to be on.?The topic was the education system.?So, I proceeded to tune everyone out so I could hear what the program had to say.?There was this black man talking about how the education system is flawed and does not work.?When I heard that I thought to myself, "well duh!I could have told you that.?The education system in America is dated.?When I was in High School we still used books from as long as 10 years ago."?So I listened in even more.?He began to speak about how "African and African Americans learn different than "European and European Americans."?He said our environment shapes us into who we are and how we cope with certain situations.?That man even spoke some what passionately (well, he tried to at least) on the subject.?He proceeded to say that studies show that after a certain age, African and African-American students fall behind European and European Americans in the power curve of Education.?This usually happens early in elementary school.?He then backed it up with "scientific and statistical evidence" from around the country.?There for the education system in America does not work for African Americans.After hearing this "fact" I became offended.?I became quite angry.?You mean to tell me that after the age of seven my brain cannot handle what it's being fed.?Apparently, it's in my genetic make up to be disposed to failure in the American education system.?That is a bunch of BULL SHIT.?For some reason Dave Chapelle popped up into my head.?Here he is talking to some "Rednecks" and they have some stereotypical comment saying, "It's no secret that black people and chicken are real acquainted with one another."?Then he goes on to think, "wow, this whole time I thought I liked chicken because it was delicious, but now I find out that I'm pre-genetically disposed to liking chicken."?Was it funny??Sure, I laughed.?Messed up?Yes, even more so.?But what that man said wasn't.?It also reminded me about this one guy who came on the Queen Latifah show.?He had said that black people are genetically more inclined to commit crimes and statistics show that.?That had pissed me off when I heard that.?It's interesting to see that we still do studies to see if one ethnic group reacts to the same control group as another ethnic group.?I thought the "Tuskegee Experiments" were over, but I guess not.?N E WAYZBack on to the subject.?No two people are alike.?Everyone learns a different way.?Some people have to touch and do it in order to learn.?Some people can see it done and then do it.?Others have to hear.?The point is everyone is different in the style that they learn but to say that you can't learn because you're black is just plain out ignorant.?What that man said, is making nothing more than a crutch for why you cannot succeed.?Nothing more than an excuse!?How many people throughout history, have come from less than meager backgrounds and fought the stereotypes/crutches and become something great??How many slaves in the past (yes the pastshoo even the present.?There are still slaves in the world) have risen to become advisors for a president, scientists, and founders of colleges??How many people have risen from a less than poor background to become multi-million dollar athletes??How many have risen to become actors, singers, and/or own their own profitable business??How many have risen to become Government officials, Lawyers, or Police Officers??How many have risen thru the ranks of our military past or present??Officer or Enlisted??You can't tell me that there is not a reason why you can't succeed at anything in life if you put your mind to it.?It's called applying yourself.?People don't just fail.?People who make bad decisions fail.My message for others who read this:?Don't let the crutches and foul ups of others shape you and the views that others have of you.?Be successful.?Shoot for the stars because the sky is the limit.?Be strong; If not for yourself, then for those people around you.?Have faith and not fear.?Faith and Fear cannot exist in the same body.?Don't doubt your abilities.?Doubt is a Muse that lost its way.?Fear is the Gate Keeper to your success.?Get past the Gate Keeper.?Stay positive.?A positive mental attitude is half the battle.?Don't let yourself become a statistic for someone else's "scientific study." |
