Shamrocks & Margaritas
There's something so cool about St. Paddy's Day.What better time for a fun holiday than the middle of March, when Christmas is a dim memory and summer's a distant mirage?Several years ago I was lucky enough to spend ten amazing days in Ireland, and I happened to be there about two weeks before St. Paddy's Day.Great!I thought.I'll pick up some gen-u-ine Irish decorations to take home.To my surprise, the stores had nothing but a few modest cards. No shamrock garlands, no special mugs for that green beer, no green derbies. That's when I realized that they don't feel the need to go all out to celebrate, because they're smack in the middle of that atmosphere created by the Blarney Stone, thatched roofs, leprechauns, quaint pubs and green hills dotted with sheep. For them, going wild on St. Paddy's Day would be, well, overkill.?We, on the other hand, whether we're Irish or not, have a yearning for the romance of it all.I guess nostalgia makes us a little crazy, and we have to have parades and paint our faces green.Americans tend to be like that enthusiastic. So go for it!I have special Mickey O'Mouse glasses and I plan to drink marg-o-ritas out of them on March 17.Hey, traditional ones are green!I'm not the green beer type, okay?I have a shiny foil shamrock garland, too.I may even get some more stuff.Too much of a good thing can be wonderful, as Mae West said.Unless, of course, you happen to be so fortunate as to celebrate St. Paddy's Day in Ireland. If that's the case, you might want to dial it back. And whatever you do, don't ask them to add green food coloring to the beer.Trust me on that one.HAPPY ST. PADDY'S DAY!Luckily yours,Vicki
