No more spring chicken
Well, it happened. The?last glance of youth has disappeared forever, and middle-age has settled upon me like a cold frost.Oh, I knew that when I turned 30 back in January that my youth was gone, but I fought it as long as I could. You are only as old as you feel, right?Well, looking at it today, I may not have a foot in the grave just yet, but my path to it seems lined with banana peels. It only took about two seconds for me to realize this was my reality on Saturday.Having the bright idea to play in a church family day picnic softball tournament, I was standing on second base with a runner on first.I knew on the next hit I would have to run, so I was hoping on top of hope for a fly ball so I could casually jog to the next base. But no.It never works that way, and the next hit was a grounder to the short-stop or, in other words, right in front of me. So, I took off as fast as I could (which isn?t all that fast in this day and time, mind you), now hoping that the ball would keep travelling past the short-stop.

So, I took off as fast as I could (which isn?t all that fast in this day and time, mind you), now hoping that the ball would keep travelling past the short-stop.I had no chance to even see if that would become a reality, however, as half-way to third base my hamstring in my left leg went: "Pop!"As the searing pain shot through my thigh, I realized the last fleeting hope of youth was gone and I had officially entered the gate to old fartdom.I continued to third base, hopping on one foot like a wounded turkey, my arms flapping wildly to maintain my balance. After that I collapsed on the ground to the tune of "Get me a runner!"As I sat under a nearby oak tree and watched the remainder of the game with my leg on a huge chunk of ice, I finally came to grips with reality.I can?t do the things that I used to do and I am going to have to start making accomodations to deal with the fact that I am not a teenager anymore. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is truly weak. But I can be proud of at least one thing. At least I didn?t get tagged out.
