MY FAVORITE MUFFIN RECIPE, part 1 |
| Eric:?a gestational tale
1974 was one helluva year.?I spent the first 4 months in Mexico City with Sergio and came back to Houston when we broke up.?I moved back in with my sister, Frankie, and got a job at the Bank of Houston.?She is 4 years older than me and an RN and we had a lot of fun.?We hung out with gay guys and had a fucking blast, doing mushrooms, quaaludes, poppers, going to gay bars (and this was pre-HIV), etc. and it was all FUN.?I met this guy one day at a free concert at Herman Park while tripping.?His name was Robert deBerry and he is Eric's sperm donor.?We hooked up and then I got pregnant.?It didn't work out between us so we broke up.?Frankie's best friend was a flaming feminist with a kid and the two of them (plus all our gay and straight friends) took me under their wings.Oh yea, the month before I got pg, I turned 21 on Friday the 13th and had a bitchin' party, laughing at what the year might bring.?At the time I was working in customer service at the bank and soon got a promotion.?I got my own desk and nameplate!?Then I got pg.?Back in 1974, a single woman was not covered for ob benefits under the insurance; you had to be married.?I had no coverage whatsoever even though I paid for insurance.?The law changed soon after that.Back to my job promotion.?When an overheard private conversation was repeated to the right people, I got demoted.?I GOT DEMOTED JUST BECAUSE I WAS PREGNANT AND UNMARRIED.?And it was legal.?Not only that, the bank president got wind of it.?It so happened he and his wife??had adopted from the Lutheran Home and he called me into his office and pressured me to go talk to the adoption people.?And also to explain that the girl who had left the position I had been promoted to was coming back to her old job.?He was very nice about it all, "surely you understand...".?My parents were also pressuring me to look into adoption.?Oh man, the call to my mom to tell her I was pregnant.?Thirty-two years later, it's a flashbulb memory. |
