Movie Review - American Gangster |
| I rented American Gangster this weekend also.?I finally was able to watch it Monday night.?I love Denzel Washington (because he's hot) so I thought I'd give it a shot.?I was expecting a black Scarface -?hoping anyway.?I was not impressed.?They played this guy up like he was some kind of Hero!?Unbelievable.?SPOILER ALERT HERE - The period was the late 60's at the height of the Vietnam war.?This black?man buys drugs from Vietnam - wholesale -cutting out the middle man and begins selling heroin for "dirt cheap" and better quality.?So what - he makes tons of money off of these stupid junkies and becomes a millionaire.?I didn't understand what I was supposed to feel.?I loathed the character.?When his wife was almost shot, I wish they would've turned the gun on him.?Thousands of junkies died because of his drugs and I'm supposed to feel sorry for the guy??I didn't get it.And when Russell Crowe's character finally caught him, put him away and then met him when he got out 15 years later.?I just didn't get it.?So half the DEA were dirty cops.?Was Denzel's character supposed to be so much better then the dirty cops????I don't understand the angle they were going with this.?If they would've made Denzel's character to be what he truly was, that would've been more acceptable to me.
The way they tried to play him up and make him the "good" guy just did not work for me.?It was stupid. Two thumbs down. |
