More Simple Times
Today, Chattanooga experienced a fine Spring day.?I longed to be outdoors to enjoy it, but had to remain within the confines of Warehouse Row and toil away another workday for CIGNA.?Days like today have me missing my previous life as a "cable guy".?For a few years, I worked for Cox Communications in Macon, GA installing cable modems.?Reflections of this job brought back memories of a specific day.?The typical workday would often have me standing around awaiting additional information from the help desk or awaiting another technician to assist with some cable stringing burden.?Two pairs of hands could see any job completed in one-half the time as a single person could do.?I don?t recall what I was waiting for on this day, but I strolled out the back door of this client?s?office and took a stroll behind the building.?There was a small grassy hill behind the office with a thicket behind it.?I enjoy walking through the woods or along the road way scanning the ground to see what has found its way there.?Through the years I have found wallets, car keys, checkbooks, photos and once newspaper machines.?This day I found something more thought provoking.?Concealed by this thicket was a small farm building. The building was too small to have been a barn.?However, it looked like it was once the place where an animal was kept.?It was very weathered but remained in tact. The trough that once held feed was still attached to the wall.?Not 100 yards away sat a modern office complex, a service station and just beyond that a very busy road.?I thought about all those people who whizz by this very spot daily or even work within a stone?s throw enjoying the wonders of modern technology.?I imagined the grassy field and serenity that once surrounded this tired old building.?I pondered what animal once spent the night here and who once visited this forgotten place daily to see his or her animal was tended to.?It appeared as though neither had been there in a very long time.My pondering of these things ended as I returned to work.?As I reflect on this day, I think of how remnants of a less complicated life and a more simple time remain hidden among the buzz and rapid pace of the world today.?If we just take the time to slow down and take a better look at the things around us, they are there for us to see and sometimes even experience.?Make no mistake, I love my cell phone, my internet, my fuel-injected car and central heat and air.?However, I appreciate those things from days gone by.?With the return of spring time, take a stroll along a creek, drive through the country, make some homemade ice-cream or find yourself an old barn in which you can meditate.?
