McCain: We must counter Iran?s threat |
| Expected Republican nominee Senator John McCain says the Iranian government poses a grave danger to US interests in the Middle East.Speaking in a campaign event in North Carolina's Charlotte on Monday, Senator McCain said the existence of a 'league of nations' is necessary to counter the 'Iranian threat'.The Tehran government must be opposed by 'a group of nations who work together and impose meaningful sanctions to modify Iranian behavior', the 71-year-old McCain continued.The Arizona senator then turned to the Bush administration's recent demonizing Tehran tactic and said, 'Iran obviously is on the path toward acquiring nuclear weapons' - an allegation that has been refuted by the UN nuclear watchdog and US intelligence agencies."At the end of the day we cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon," he continued."They are not only doing that, they are exporting very lethal devices and explosives into Iraq.They also, according to published news reports, have been training people in Iran that have been going back into Iraq to lead these Jihadists," McCain added.This is while the Bush administration echelons are yet to provide concrete proof in support of their steady stream of accusations regarding 'Iranian influence in Iraq'.Pundits believe McCain's Iran approach may backfire for the senator when he needs the popular vote to defeat the Democratic nominee in November's general elections.MD/HGH
