Into the Wild - Movie Review
We went to the Myrna Loy Center Friday to watch "Into the Wild".?It is a movie directed by Sean Penn and the book I believe was written by Jon Krakauer.?The movie is about a young man, Christopher McCandless,?who graduates from college then decides that he is going?to live off of the land.?He gives away about $24,000 that is left in his?college fund to charity and he takes off in his?car where he abandons it in Nevada.?It is a very interesting look at how?family affects us and the decisions that we make in life.?There was a lot of fighting going on in that family.?The parents were constantly at war.?Although they were financially?successful, they did not provide a lot of emotional stability in the lives of their children.?I think that Christopher who later dropped that name and went by Alexander Supertramp just gave up on life.?He bounced around the west coast for a while (a year and a half or so), sometimes taking jobs, living with people he'd met on the road.?Finally he decided that he was going to go to Alaska and live apart from society, like a mountain man.??He met some very nice people along the way, even an older?gentleman who wanted to adopt him.?That scene?brought me to tears. It was pretty sad, even depressing to see an intelligent?young man with such promise give up on life.?Last year my family went through a very tumultuous time and there was that threat of divorce constantly in the air for probably 6 months or so.?My children suffered a great deal durimg that time.It was most evident to me when my daughter wrote an essay and the words that she wrote were like a knife in my heart.?She wrote that she just wanted to give up when all the crap was going on.?I think that after a while of constant pressure, children don't want to deal with it and in their own way find a way to not care and they give up.Christopher did not contact his family once during that entire time he was gone.?That to me was pretty brutal.?He had a younger sister that he was pretty close to, but did not once call or write her.I'm not a psychiatrist, but I think that?what happened to Christopher is that he just gave up.??He was trying to get back to society but the tiny river he had initially crossed was experiencing a spring runoff, and had turned into a dangerous raging river.?That's when he accidentally ate the poisonous roots that made him sick?which eventually led to his starvation.Sad.......
