Fanboys
I like lotsa geeky things and I know many of you do as well...comic books, cult movies, sci-fi and horror tv shows and movies, etc. I'm all for being passionate about stuff like that. It's fun to be a fan of something. However, there are those fans that never seem to have a good thing to say about the things they spend so much time, money and energy on.It's just plain weird and I don't think I'll ever understand it.I've always enjoyed visiting online message boards about stuff I like and reading what other fans have to say about our mutual interests. One thing that absolutely floors me is seeing how many times someone will post about something they don't like. For example, a few years ago writer Mark Waid wrote a 12 issue comic book series updating Superman's origin story called 'Birthright'.Now, most ordinary mortals would read the first issue and just not buy it again if they didn't care for it....right?One guy who calls himself manoftheatom posted anti-Waid/Birthright rants even before the first issue was published. He reacted as though Waid had crept into his house on Christmas Eve and took a huge reeking shit in his stocking. He even used the word abortion to describe the comic.Sadly he wasn't the only one who behaved this way.The vitriol that regularly spewed forth from a vocal minority was so bad that Waid stopped posting at the message board. What I found gobsmackingly weird was that these inept fucktards bought all 12 issues of the book.To me, that's like getting your genitalia caught in a zipper and ripping yourself to bloody pieces, and then doing it on purpose regularly.I also visit a message board which has a Doctor Who section.I visit the forum less and less due to the amount of mean-spirited posts about Doctor Who and head writer Russell T Davies.Even though the votes for each episode are overwhelmingly positive, the number of negative comments far outweigh the positive ones. Why?Because those who don't like the new series post over and over and over again about how much they don't like it.What's frustrating is that the forum has a rule that states you can't suggest that maybe they should stop watching it.It's the most sensible thing anyone could say to someone who doesn't like a television show, don't you think? It astonishes me that someone could despise something so much but subject themselves to it every week.It gets worse...there are also some folks who not only hate the show but who buy the DVDs!!!!If you're anything like me, you want to kick their doors down, steal their televisions and DVDs to give away to someone who might actually appreciate them.I have no problem with people who rip the shit out of something they don't like...bad reviews can often be far more entertaining than their subject.I love writing the occasional scathing review. However, I just don't get why anyone would subject themselves regularly to anything that they don't enjoy. And yes, I know all about the sports fan analogy, that you remain loyal to your team no matter what. That is true and I applaud people who have that kind of loyalty. However, I don't sense any of that with these fans. These people seem to thrive on the constant carping and nitpicking. There's no doubt in my mind that they actually enjoy it and that's what I will never understand. So listen up, you socially retarded fuck-knuckles!Instead of sitting your spotty bovine arses down every week to watch something you hate, how about directing that negative energy into doing something more positive...like changing the farking channel or turning the tv off..?!And comic fans...not enjoying the latest issues of Cowman And Cud?Give this radical idea some thought...give another comic book a try!Stop putting your money in the pockets of mediocre creators and support better work. And if you feel the need to express an honest negative opinion, write it, post it and leave it at that.Got it?Good! Now go for a walk, get a haircut, have a shower, use some deoderant and buy some clothes that your mother doesn't choose for you.
