Australia votes for new Prime Minister |
| Australia's Prime Minister, John Howard, has been given the boot by Australian voters.Kevin Rudd, the Labor Party leader has been chosen the next prime minister.?I really don't keep up with Australian politics; it's hard enough trying to keep track of U.S. politics here. However, after Howard's statements last February, I certainly didn't think he needed to be Australian's leader for much longer.Last February in response to Barack Obama's statement that he would introduce a bill in the senate that would prevent an increase of troops in Iraq and pull them back by March 2008, Howard stated during an interview, "I think that will just encourage those who want to completely destabilize and destroy Iraq, and create chaos and a victory for the terrorists to hang on and hope for an Obama victory."Then he said:"If I were running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory, not only for Obama but also for the Democrats."As his nation's leader and representative, his comments were totally out of bounds. His view that terrorists would welcome a victory by democrats was childish.Statements like those from leaders and pundits when discussing serious issues is getting old.Howard is representative of what's wrong with the political discourse in this country.Instead of debating the issues, personal insults have become the norm.If you're one of the people who've used the terms "democrap," "republicons," or "libtards," I'm including you into that group of people who find it easier to insult than to present factual points in an effort to sway another's opinion.I think the speech Kevin Rudd gave after Howard's interview shows how silly it was for him to make that statement.http://www.crooksandliars.com/Media/Play/14361/1/Rudd-responds-to-Howard.wmv/ |
