8:07 PM - Something seems very different here |
| They say that it's easier to get a new job when you still have your old one.?I've experienced things both ways, and I gotta say, there's something to that.?Just psychologically speaking, you're going to be more confident at the interview if you don't need that job to pay rent next month. But this is something else entirely.?This is something I haven't experienced before.A little bit of backstory: the company I'm working for is being bought by another company.?A lot of people will be out of a job here in about six months.?More will be employed for about a year, then let go.?The rest are getting full-time positions at the new place.?The ones getting jobs think they're actually the ones getting the raw deal - the rest of us get a severance package when we're let go.Yes, we.?I'm one of the guys with the opportunity to hang around for another year without a raise.?Been over a year already, what's another one, right?..Yeah.?I said, "fuck that," too.So I'm job hunting.?Well, that's not actually quite accurate.?And that's what's weird.?See, I just stuck my information up on Monster - not the first time I've done that - and I've been getting emails.?I've been getting phone calls.?People are actually contacting me to see if I'm interested in jobs.?Temp companies, headhunters, and direct employers are saying, "Hey - found your resume on Monster, and I have a job I think you'd like."Huh??Since when did this happen??I mean, I'm not the only one this is happening to, don't get me wrong.?I've heard a few of the guys I work with getting these kinds of calls.?It's just something I'm not used to.Not that I'm complaining, mind you.?It does wonders for the ego.?When I'm talking to these people, I am polite and courteous, but inside I'm thinking, "Hey - you called me."?It makes me want to negotiate for higher pay or something. And I have the luxury of not letting them lowball me.?If the offer isn't for enough money, I can hold out for a better offer.?I have a year of job ahead of me.?And if they let me go, there's that severance thing to pay the rent for a while.?No pressure. It seems the time I've spent at this job has done exactly what I'd hoped it would.?I know more now than I did going in.?My resume (it appears) is looking attractive.I do believe I've gone from having a job to having a career. |
