6:39 AM - Coming Soon to a Culvert Near You!
|
| A few blog entries ago (Let the Marauding Begin!)I mentioned that the high risk season for chickens was upon us.To recap: a mile from our place we spotted three very young foxes testing their extremities along the bank of a creek. We hadn't seen the red fox babies since, though we did, in full daylight, spy a pair of adults hunting the hogback that is our yard.? Foxes are secretive and nocturnal unless they happen to have a den full of kits and said kits are demanding food 'right now, parents!'? Well, we spotted the young would-be marauders diving into a culvert that marks the halfway point between the initial sighting and our 2,000 square feet of well-fenced hillside chicken habitat.Hm, said we.Hm: the cute little troublemakers are closing in.? Then, at the base of our drive, we were witness to a striped skunk entering the culvert. That culvert is maybe 150 feet below the hen house.Skunks, too, eat chickens. If they can.? My job is take the 'can' out of the equation.? By the way, our 5 six-year-old hens, which are, by most accounts, two years too old to lay eggs, are giving us an average of three eggs a day.Sunday each one of the little darlings laid an egg.We have been enjoying omelets so golden they are almost orange!? If you need fresh organic eggs, do stop by.? ? P.S. The free-ranging hens around the corner have been penned.Anybody care to guess why? |
