5:18 PM - My Most Embarrassing Moment |
| ?One of my tops, Dorraine Darden, author of Jack Rabbit Moon, asked readers to share embarrassing moments on her author's blog. Here's my most embarrassing moment (or at least the one I posted there and the one I'm willing to tell you about!): ? I was 23, and was being given the 'Volunteer of the Year' award by the local PBS station for having organized a particularly well-received month of fundraising and publicity events. It was one of those hoity-toity three-wine dinners where university professors wore ball gowns and their husbands stood dutifully in super-shined shoes.I had my hair done for the occasion and wore a lovely silk gown, strappy high heels and a borrowed vintage fur stole.I felt like a princess. That is, until, award in hand, I stepped back from the microphone and a heel jammed into the heater grate. At first, no one noticed because they were busy applauding their media darling, the girl who had smooth-talked commercial TV stations into plugging the PBS events for free, the girl who had charmed column inch after column inch of feature article from each newspaper in the county ... me, the girl who was stuck in the heater grate behind the podium and wanted nothing more than a graceful way out of her strappy shoes. On went the applause. On went my attempts to work loose my heel. The crowd politely stood and clapped; my delay in leaving the podium had brought on a standing ovation. And I was still stuck.Maybe they wondered why I stood so long absorbing praise and holding up dessert, I don't know, but eventually I had to utter these words into the microphone: "Could someone please help me? I'm stuck!"? ? ? Read more embarrassing moments on Dorraine Darden's author's blog, or share your own for a chance to win a copy of her novel, here: http://www.dorrainedarden.com/blog/ ?
