2008 Has begun.
OOOOOOK so there I was.Unfortunately we are not the picture taking crew, every time we get a new project we get so involved in it that we forget to take the pictures. So the entire off season we worked on this mod, it took that long to pull it out of mothballs and make it race ready despite preliminary reports to the contrary. We ended up busting hump right up until the morning of the first practice session. The bonus was the mod fit in the trailer without ramps, so switching between prostock and mod is easy. When we got to the track for the first practice we thought we were looking pretty good, the car was coming out the way the prostock should on the scales. We did some tweaking with tire pressure and all went well.Mike got in the car and spent 15 or so minutes getting his new head and neck restraint system to fit right. Then we were ready for the first practice of the day.I forgot to mention one thing, I was dying, the worst cold I'd had all year, I had been sick for the last three days of work on the racecar.I was dead on my feet pounding back shots of cough medicine and stuffing wads of Kleenex in my pockets, while I was wrapped up in my hooded sweatshirt with the hood over my headset.I digress, Mike heads out to the track for the first time to bed in the breaks and scuff in the four year old hockey pucks we had to practice on, nothing more, no speed runs, no times on the stopwatch, nothing. He gets on the track and starts warming the tires up, takes the car through the first corner, second corner, and then they throw the green flag, when he gets to the third turn and touches the brakes the back tires erupt in smoke an the car snaps around and smacks the wall ass first.Thats how the first practice went, bent up bumper and twisted the left rear nerf bar, all because as we later found out somebody had labled the brake bias adjustment wrong, so when he thought he was cranking front brake into the car, it was rear.Mike and Paul put the car back together while I recovered the following week, and when the next practice session came around the following Saturday we were ready to go again.Unloaded and went out on the track.
Unloaded and went out on the track.Mike got the brakes dialed in, and once the flag dropped he started turning laps to heat up the tires. After a few close calls while figuring out what he could see and the closing rates of traffic, the practice ended. One minor problem he forgot to turn the fan on and we had an overheating engine steaming away.So after taking care of that and making a few chassis adjustments we were ready to get back on track. The process was repeated after a brief agricultural excursion (he got in the grass while warming up the tires.)Mike started bringing the car up to speed, getting comfortable with it he went to the outside on a car heading for the pits at that moment the car headed straight into the turn three wall both front tires locked up solid smoking until the contact. That was it, the car came in on the wrecker and the day was done. The consensus is the right front tire blew going into three and the car shot up into the wall, clearing the right front wheel off and sending the nerf bar into the right rear wheel.Bending or breaking everything on the right front of the car.It was an ugly hit, and ended our bid for ice breaker weekend. And now.... we've started putting the car back together at Steve's and its going to be fine, I still hate mods, and now that I've worked on them I can say that with understanding. They are ugly, fragile, and boring to watch. We'll be ready for the next race in May to give this mod thing one more shot. Finally, we've begun to put the Baby back together from the off season, the engine is back in, and most of the peripherals are in place. We need about two more days and the car will be ready to scale, in plenty of time for the next round of practices, and another trip down the Angell Lane test track.
