| Pop posted a blog today about her in-progress trip to Canada, and included the following phrase in French:"Oui, vous etes tres belle, mais l'escaliers sont dur."She then suggested that I explain.And so:I was using a somewhat obscure language-learning program called LinkWord to learn Japanese.One feature of this program I really liked was that, rather than teaching you specific phrases (which you would then end up parroting without grasping the language itself), it more or less randomly assembled sample sentences using vocabulary you had learned.In that sense, it was very much like a school text book.I never ran across "the monkey is on the branch," but some of the resulting sentences presented to me for translation were pretty obscure.It worked, though, at least for a while.One day, I was learning words related to travel, such as words one might use in a hotel.Some of these words were then combined with others I had picked up before, and the following was presented for me to translate:Anata wa totemo kieri desu, keredomo kaidan wa katsai desu.That translates to, "You are very beautiful, but the stairs are hard."I was laughing too hard to continue. |
