2:50 PM - When Snakes Fly |
| So there we were hiking near the edge of the Golden Eagle Protection Area in one of the local open space parks when we spied a large bird silhouetted against the overcast sky.?We've seen scores of bald eagles in our fifteen years of rabid, er, avid hiking and can identify many, many species without a guide, but are not yet adept at determining golden eagles from other raptors. We've hiked past this particular nest on the hogback's cliff dozens of times without once witnessing activity.(We have old eyes and the trail is a solid half mile from the nest. Also, while we routinely carry pretty rocks around in our packs, carrying binoculars seems too much to ask.So.)? Today, however, we know we saw a golden eagle.Said eagle flew over us with a snake in its talon and dropped said snake in the boulder field below the cliff. While we gathered our wits, the eagle flew right up to the nest where he was apparently (and promptly) told to go away and come back with breakfast! The eagle soared overhead again, towards, we figured, the nearest Starbucks.?Doya think maybe they can make a rattler frappuccino for our friend? |
